Some parents of transgender children in Tennessee say they are planning to uproot their families and move to states where they can safely and legally seek gender-affirming care.

Jason, the father of a 10-year-old trans boy in Middle Tennessee, told that he quit his decades-long career to find a job that would allow his family to relocate. His daughter is currently only receiving mental health counseling, but his father wants her to have the option of seeking puberty blockers or hormone therapy when she's ready to make the decision.

“We should be able to seek medical help if our daughter needs it,” said Jason, who is using only his first name for fear of retaliation from local conservative groups.

Jason said he knows several other families with trans children who are considering moving out of Tennessee.

Sarah, a mother of three in Nashville, said she would “do anything” to make sure her 16-year-old trans son could get his testosterone treatment, including moving out of state. She is using a fake name for her family's safety.

Currently, Sarah drives her son from their home in Nashville to a clinic in North Carolina to receive the treatment — a roughly 10-hour trip. She said she will follow the Supreme Court's decision carefully as she weighs whether to relocate.

“We will get through this. I won't do anything drastic now, but if it comes to that, I'll do anything for our safety and to make him happy.
